Winding up March

Today is the last day of March and it’s kinda a pretty exhausting day for I have done lots of things, from paying our monthly electric bill which has a scheduled disconnection activity this week to getting a copy of my sister’s school’s transcript of records for she is planning to take the NCLEX (I don’t exactly what it means although I have an idea that it’s an examination taken before one is allowed to work as a nurse abroad). I expected to be out of the confines of my home the whole day today, so I decided that I have to leave my daughter to the care of my recently-college graduate househelper, Jollybeth,  for it would be difficult for me to be bringing her to wherever I go because it’s extremely hot outside. Health wise, it is safer for my daughter to stay at home and watch her favorite Playhouse Disney Channel TV shows instead.  I left the house this morning at around nine o’clock and my first destination was the Philippine Regulations Commission (PRC). Jollybeth will take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) this Sunday, April 6, 2008, and yet her notice of examination hasn’t arrived. Upon my inquiry, I found out that it was already sent through snail mail and as expected, receipt of that notice will be delayed. Good if it will arrive before the examination day. Anyway, even without that notice, according to the PRC personnel who I talked to, she still can take the examination. I was just instructed to find her name in the master list of examinees posted at their bulletin board and I had to copy her place of examination, room/group number and seat number for her to avoid the time-consuming finding of her room assignment on the examination day. I was also reminded by the said personnel that the examinee has to bring a No. 2 lead pencil, black ballpen, self-addressed stamped window envelope, transparent long envelope and a white envelope. I decided to buy those things in a department store a little later. I am exerting more effort in preparation for this upcoming teacher’s board exam than the examinee herself. For the record, them preparations I making today for Jollybeth is more than the preparations I made when I took the Professional Board Examination for Teachers in 1993 where I managed to land in the seventh place among the top ten board examinees.  My next destination was the National Statistics Office to get a copy of Certificate of Live Birth of Jonah, my parents’ house helper who has been with our family for more than seven years. The said Certificate of Live Birth will be submitted to the Registrar of Eastern Visayas State University where Jonah recently graduated with a degree in Bachelor in Food Technology. It was my mother who first sent her to school and after her demise, my younger sister, continued to pay her tuition fees. Despite all odds, she hurdled to get a college diploma and her very proud parents and sister were there to witness her march and receive a diploma on her graduation day. My sister was also there to photograph the momentous event. 

Then I went to LEYECO to pay our electric bill. I almost fainted to see the voluminous number of people inside the paying area waiting for their numbers to be called. At the time I entered the area, the number being called was 705 while number was 892. I thought of going out first and return later, but thought otherwise instead for I remembered their scheduled disconnection later this week. I had no choice but to wait for my number to be called. It was good that my sister sent a text message to my cellphone about the upcoming birthday of her daughter, Kate Avrill, that I had something to busy of.

 Next  I went to a photo developing store to have the pictures of Jollybeth’s graduation developed. By the way, Jollybeth graduated last week with a degree in Bachelor in Teaching Technology and Home Economics. She has been with us for more than four (4) years now and we consider her as part of our family. On her graduation day, none of her family members or any relative were there to witness her march the stage and receive her diploma. In their behalf, I, my daughter, my sister and her husband, were there to stand as witnesses in this once in a lifetime event. I and my brother in law took turns in taking pictures of her while my sister and my two year old daughter were in audience to applause her. After her graduation, we all went to a restaurant and had our lunch. It was a celebration for her. It was a happy event for all of us even if the person graduating is not in anyway a biological relative.  

Then I had lunch at around one o’clock in the afternoon. After that I went to my younger sister’s school to request for a copy of her Transcript of Records but the in charge was not there.I instead went to the Philhealth office to pay my quarterly dues and afterwards went to pay our water bill at LMWD. But my day never ended that. I went to the department store to buy our food supply for this week before going home. Whew, finally I’m home and I’m with my daughter again. What a physically tiring day!

My Fashion Statement as a Freshman

When I passed the UPCAT, my parents decided that I should study at UP without giving me any opportunity to compromise. For them, all other schools were irrelevant, not because UP was the only school in our region nor are there any other good schools to give me quality education.  They preferred to enroll me at UP because that was the only way to free them up from another college tuition fee expense. Being the fifth child in the brood of seven, my entering to college was another predicament for my parents whose meager income could no longer afford to send me to a private school as two of my other elder siblings were then enrolled in a private medical school. The tuition fees and other miscellaneous expenses of my medical student brothers ate up a large portion of my parents’ monthly salary.

In a way, to enroll at UP was a blessing in disguise as that would liberate me from wearing a sky blue blouse with necktie and pleated sky blue skirt uniform for four long years! Most of the college students in our region wore that uniform, obviously they were in the same school, and the only evident distinction of a UP student from a non-UP one was the dress code.

When school was about to start in June, I was poured with enormous excitement to dress according to my own style and taste, thus, in preparation for school, I had to do some mixing and matching of the few wardrobes I had.  I also had fascinations of becoming a campus femme fatale who would get to turn guys’ heads, a fashion icon who will solicit rave fashion commentaries from the socialist and elitist personalities in school, or a luminary in the alluring field of fashion if I wear fashionable dresses.

 My fashion statement was first exposed to the UP campus on the very first day of school. I was confidently dressed in accord to my own definition of stylistic fashion sense without a minutest hint that it was totally a fashion disaster brought about by my undefined barrio-tic fashion statement confused with incongruous taste for fashion accessories. Imagine I was clad in a violet-collared white shirt tucked in an ankle-length plain sky blue ‘A-line’ skirt with a long slit at one side. The conservative side of me had me wear a “half slip” inside to keep my underwear from being publicly exposed as my skirt was see-through. To un-complement my attire, I wore a beige Timberland leather sneakers shoes with white socks and carried a predominantly red Baguio-knit long sling shoulder bag that reaches my knees. To add  more calamity to my catastrophic fashion sense, I accessorized myself with  a fake Guess watch in my left wrist that caused itchiness to my ever sensitive skin, a big plastic yellow bangle in my right hand, and a pair of fake gold earrings that made my earlobes swell and eventually got deformed. It was truly an extreme deviation from the fashion genre of that time but nobody cared, or should I say, nobody cared to tell me how awful I looked!

What’s in my name?

My name is Dureza Antoinette. It is pronounced as “Doo-re-za  An-twa-ney”. The name Dureza was my father’s weird choice while the name Antoinette ( from Marie Antoinette, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte) was chosen by my mother . Back in my elementary and high school days, I used to have had aversions over my parents for their bad taste in choosing a name for me. I basically never liked my given name and I had thousands of reasons never to like it at all.        

  My name, Dureza, which has an “A” at the end, has a quality of being inelegantly archaic. The Antoinette, though, is somehow more sophisticated which in one way or another modernized the antiquity of my other name. It is ironical why I hated classic names when to most people it is the best sounding names.My name was in itself a victim of countless disastrous mispronunciations and several murderous misspellings when I was in my elementary grades and high school years. Some of my teachers incorrectly pronounced my name as “Due-re-sa”, “Do-ri-sa”, “Dow-rey-sa” or “Due-rey-za”. I just don’t remember if they bothered to ask me how to pronounce it correctly. Nevertheless, I was at fault for having tolerated them to call me as such. I never corrected the mispronunciation of my name for I was then very timid to open my mouth to tell them that was not how my name should be pronounced. I tolerated them to call me “Due-re-sa” or “Do-ri-sa” even if such sounded like a bell  annoyingly ringing closely in the entrance of my would-be deaf ears.

My classmates murdered the spelling of my name as “Dorisa”, “Duriza” “Duressa” and other odd spellings which sounded like Dureza.My name had its share of ridicule from my classmates as it was associated with the name “Doray” which was the name of a very old woman in our Filipino character book whose partner was “Lolo Ingo”. “Doray” eventually became my petname that it made me furious to whoever called me by such name.  To whoever called me “Doray” got my raised eyebrow with abhorrence deep in my heart.

I find the history of my Dureza name very despicable as the name Dureza was copied from a classic English comic book. When people started asking where my name came from, I was reluctant to tell the truth. I was ashamed to tell them that my father came across that name from a comic book he was reading when my mother was still pregnant with me. Of course, I never told anyone about it in order to save from shame my father who is known to be a bookworm who consumes a day reading thick novels written by brilliant authors. Little do people know that he also reads comic books.  When I browsed through the internet, I found out that Dureza is a Portuguese term which means hardness, as in hardness of a rock and other solid state.

When I went to study college in a leading university, it was then that I learned to appreciate my name. My teachers and classmates praised my name for being unique to them. The pet name “Doray” was changed to “Doris” and the “Dorisa” was pronounced and spelled as “Dureza”.

I am now thankful to my parents for not being christened as “Candelaria” or “Guada” for being born on the Feast of the Candles (February 2) nor for giving me a name that is the same with that of  “most wanted’ criminals blacklisted to get a clearance from the national Bureau of Investigation. What a relief!

The Story Behind This Site

DORISDAY website is an upshot of my colossal aspiration to expand my very limited internet abilities. Though nothing prepared me to do this site, DORISDAY came into being still by accident, just like my being a blogger which also came by accident. My personal conviction to learn new web-related things was my only weapon to push through in making this website. By the way, I am not a graduate in any computer course and I also do not have any professional background in computer operations and web-related stuffs. This website is only an elementary achievement of an inexperienced but trying hard web maker and designer. Without doubt, how I made this site will inspire those HTML illiterates to start their own sites. Most books say that in order to start making your own web page, one should learn the basic things of HTML. When I was making this site, I never had the slightest idea of what HTML is and what it’s meant. Some books say that the HTML language is not that difficult to learn since the computer already has the tools necessary to get started writing HTML code. But to tell you honestly, until now I don’t know how it works even if I have read it a couple of times. I even copied an article I found on the web and here it is:

The Basic Order of Things

Anyone who wants to learn how to create a web page has to do the following things.

1.       Learn HTML. 2.       Write a HTML document and save it to your home computer. 3.       FTP a copy of the HTML file you saved on your computer to Net.

Eventually you may wish to get a HTML editor to make quick work of coding HTML.

What is HTML?

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the basic building block of every web page on the net. Every web page you have ever seen is written with HTML. I highly suggest buying a book to learn HTML. The language itself is not that difficult to learn and your computer already has the tools necessary to get started writing HTML code.

Tools for Writing HTML?

You can write HTML code using any plain text editor like Notepad on Windows or SimpleText on the Mac. There are text editors available on the net that are specifically designed for creating HTML code. Notepad is a little too bare bones for myself. So I recommend that Windows download the shareware programs Edit Plus to write their HTML code with. It is simple, doesn’t use a lot of memory, and can even upload your pages to FrogNet. You don’t need a fancy program to write HTML.

Why Learn HTML?

The best way to learn how to write a web page is to learn HTML first. Unfortunately, people who are too impatient to read a book usually buy an HTML program that does all the thinking for them. While this might sound like the solution you are looking for, I highly discourage it. If you go the lazy route, you’ll never know how to tweak the HTML code to your web pages in order to make them look the way you want. You’re imagination will always be restricted by the confines of your HTML editor.I am not saying that you shouldn’t ever use an HTML editor. I personally use (and recommend) Macromedia Dreamweaver for the creation of HTML. I am saying that your first few pages should be written by hand, just so you can get the gist of things. After that, use a program to take the busy work out of HTML coding.

I have read the above article and many other related articles on web making for many times but still I can’t fully comprehend what is HTML all about and how it works.   After surfing the net, through Google and Yahoo, on the step by step free tutorials of creating a website, I came across WordPress and immediately signed up even if I didn’t know exactly how go about it. It was in August 2007 when I had my first blog on WordPress. The very pale blue boring page I created then was very disappointing that I lost interest in continuing my website project. It was only during the last week of February 2008 when I accidentally opened a not-so-good web page of a local TV personality that my desire to continue my website project came back. I am not saying that my site is better than that of the TV personality’s site. In a way, I am thankful to her because had I not seen that second-rate site, for sure, I am still having that pale blue boring site. Here’s a very easy step by step process making a website using wordpress as your editor: 

1. Go to www.wordpress.com and get a free wordpress account. My account is dorisday and my domain name is www.dorisday.wordpress.com
2. Register a blog or start creating your blog
3. Open the dashboard and make a post. If you are not yet prepared to make a blog, just write anything you wish to say and edit later
4. Everytime you want to edit your post or page, always log in to wordpress.
5. Just follow the instructions and don’t be afraid to explore.
